One of the first things to become adept at is paying attention to all of the drivers within striking — yes, I did say ‘striking’ — distance of you and your vehicle. Think of driving today as a more dangerous version of the carny bumper-car ride, played out at higher speeds over a much larger area, with the added complications of slow-moving pedestrians, presumptuous cyclists, and truckers alternating between obtuse distraction and overt aggression. Consider it also a zero-sum game: whoever doesn’t make it home safely will end up with crumpled fender in a ditch, if not worse.

Develop the habit of not only checking your rear and side mirrors, speedometer and gas gauge, but also the faces, expressions and vehicles of those moving in traffic nearby. One of the first to watch out for: any vehicle having both a ‘Student Driver’ decal in plain sight, and an elder male passenger in the front right seat a) whose hair is standing on end, or b) who keeps frantically shooting glances over right shoulder, then left, then right again. You can be sure that vehicle will signal right turn, while making a lazy and erratic left turn, into oncoming traffic, with about a dozen wheel adjustments, at 9 miles per hour. See? What did I tell you?

Beware also of any vehicle you cannot yet see, or hear, really — but instead actually FEEL, through the seat of your car and the seat of your pants, as the bass rap rumble of its multiple 1200w speakers sends shock waves radiating down the highway. Trust me — if this gal can so blithely make a wreck of her life, she can certainly make a wreck out of you and your sedan.

Next, keep your eyes peeled for any vehicle (quite often, a classic ‘K’ car, for some reason) in which neither head nor headgear is visible above the driver’s seatback. All you’re likely to see are two liver-spotted sets of frail fingers gripping the oversize steering wheel in a chokehold at 11 and 1. You will likely encounter these vehicles by having to frantically decelerate from just over 12 miles an hour above the speed limit to just under 12 miles an hour above zero, to keep from ending up sitting in the trunk bearing the five AAA Elite decals and the Ronald Reagan bumper sticker. Isn’t it great that Gram or Gramps is still able to get out in the world at six-years-older-than-dirt? You are best off taking the very next turn — right, or left, or into someone’s driveway, anywhere, really — to get out from behind this car that’s almost in reverse. You can’t win, so don’t even try.

Take care as you encounter the teenmobile. You know the type: a beater with at least three different body-paint colors scattered about various sections of the vehicle; window markings of ‘Class of ‘11’ or Go Bears!’ or ‘Beat Temple!’ or ‘School Sux!’ or something else equally compelling; 7 or 9 or 12 teenagers crammed inside; deafening and painfully bad music mewling out and mixing with clouds of burnt-oil smoke. This type of vehicle is almost assuredly going to collide with you, whether from driver insolence, inattention, stupidity, or spite, or combination thereof. (Remember how obnoxious YOU were in high school?) Don’t tempt fate.

Also do not mess with the van having window shades, two or more infant seats, finger-smears on all 9 windows, and a driver that looks like she has just lost her last tenuous grip on reality. Take it from me; she has. Between PMS, EMS and Post-Partum, you’ll end up hurtin’ for certain, and a long while in recovery. Just back away slowly, slip into traffic and glide away.

And finally, learn to give way to the ubiquitous BMOTH (Big-Man-On-The-Highway). Yeah, just like in high school, or on the college campus, or at your first job (or second, or third), there’s always somebody that thinks they are just a bit cooler, a bit more capable, a bit more deserving, a bit more entitled than the rest of us plebes with driver’s licenses. You’ll see them tooling along in Jag or vintage Shelby or even just a glorified mid-market yupsedan, expounding executively into their cell phone, briefcase open on the passenger seat, steaming light latté in the console, suit jacket on hanger behind thinning pompous pate, business pages open on the steering column. As you would anywhere else in life, give these guys a wide berth on the highway. They’re nothing but trouble. They’ll cut into your lane with a hand’s-breadth to spare, smirkily signaling after they’re already in, then get caught up in some crisis of global business and let their speed drop lower and lower and lower. Take my advice: slide a few lanes away and leave Big Man to all those other great drivers on the road. They deserve one another.

Developer Volition changed the camera perspective to help the player see and appreciate the surroundings as they are destroyed.

Much of the game centers around the game’s Geomod 2.0 engine, which allows for buildings, cover, and other structures to be dynamically destroyed. In many cases, destroying buildings will leave behind salvage, the game’s form of currency, which can be used along with salvage rewarded by completing missions to unlock and upgrade weaponry and technology at safehouses. During the campaign, the player is equipped with a sledgehammer-like weapon, along with up to 3 other weapons or explosive devices. 10. God of War Series

First off, I don’t even own a PS3. I have never played any of the God Of War games but I consider this to be an essential purchase still if you’re a fan of video game and general epic movie soundtracks in genreal. There are several different artists here splitting up the tracks which usually I don’t like but its so hard to tell a difference in the sound and quality so this is one of the rare multi-artist soundtracks that pull it off so smoothly. If you’re a fan of the game then i’d imagine you’d enjoy this just as much, if not more then me!  -Amazon.com Review

Marino, Ron Fish, Mike Reagan, Jeff Rona, and Cris Velasco – was released as downloadable content (58 minutes and 42 seconds in length) through the God of War III: Ultimate Edition and Ultimate Trilogy Edition by SCEI. 9. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

Following his score for “Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune”, composer Greg Edmonson returns to accompany Nathan Drake on his latest adventure, “Uncharted 2: Among Thieves”.  With “Drake’s Fortune”, Edmonson provided a rich score that perfectly matched the lush, colorful jungle environments from the game. While it did have some nice themes, the score mostly felt like background music/underscore, with little identity from track to track. It’s incredibly effective within the game, and is enjoyable enough to listen to, but overall, it just lacked a certain something.  

However, with “Among Thieves”, Edmonson outdid himself. As the locales have changed for the game, as has the sound, though the style is very much the same as the first score, so they fit together well. This time around, Edmonson gives the score a more exotic, Oriental feel, though he never relies on any cliches one might expect of such a score. Also, the “Among Thieves” score offers more in the way of melody, utilizing more of “Nate’s Theme” than its predecessor really did. The action cues here are also top-notch, each with their own sound and identity, and aren’t quite as interchangeable as the action music from the first game. -Amazon.com Review

8. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater

I am a huge Metal Gear Solid fan, and when I heard that Harry Gregson-Williams would be joining in to compose the second game I got so excited, and was even more excited when he stayed for #3. Hans Zimmer is my favorite composer of all time, and I absolutely love every composer that comes out of Media Ventures. Williams keeps the feel of the original soundtrack, but adds his trademark techno spin to it. 

Fans will recognize the same style in Spy Game, Phonebooth, and The Rundown. The game becomes a film all because of the amazing talents of Williams. It’s also interesting that he composed all the music solely based on Hideo Kojimas descriptions of atmosphere and actions. Usually scores are composed when a finished film has been presented to the composer, here Williams worked only off of sketches and writings. But the price here on Amazon is very high, at GKWorld they sell it for 13 dollars brand new. -Amazon.com Review

 

7. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

When playing a video game as much as Modern Warfare 2, some of the musical beats may be engrained in their brain. And even though these beats may be short, they are there. The Modern Warfare 2 soundtrack expands upon these familiar beats into full-length tracks. The results are surprisingly good.  Most/all of the music comes from the underrated portion of the game. From the opening title credits music, to when you first walk out in a war-torn Washington DC, to the momentous end credits.

The score completes the game, and since it’s done by Hans Zimmer, you know it’s going to be highly professional, and at least some of it is going to be memorable. I’ll say this about the soundtrack, is that it certainly fits the mood of the game. It’s the type of music you’d find in a war film, and action movie, or a fast-paced drama. In fact, the only problem I have with the soundtrack is the title naming. It would be nice to know which track is from which particular scene. If you know the game well enough, you can guess, but it would be nice to know specifics.  

Overall, if you found yourself a fan of the music found in Modern Warfare 2, by all means check this out. They didn’t have to put out this product, but they listened to the fans and gave us a great, complete package. Bravo Infinity Ward, Hans Zimmer, etc.  -Amazon.com Review

 

6. Battlefield: Bad Company 2

If you are part of the Bad Company “Regime,” then this is for you! My favorite is “Snowy Mountains” because it leaves you full of suspense and anticipation. Mikael Karlsson does a great job with the music! His music fits directly to this game and makes you crave jumping back into the action. I cannot wait until the new Medal of Honor comes out and I know DICE and EA will take over as reigning champions of developing shooters.   -Amazon.com Review

5. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns Of The Patriots

This is one of the best soundtracks I have heard in a while, and that includes movie soundtracks. If you are a fan of The Bourne Identity/Supremacy/Ultimatum soundtracks, written by the brilliant British composer John Powell, you will absolutely love this one. It’s in the same vein. 2 hours and 20 minutes of intense action-packed music marked by tribal drumming and eerie overtones will have you on the edge of your seat, be it at your desk or on the highway doing triple digits. Not for the faint of heart! This can safely be filed under “Buy or die.” -Amazon.com Review

4. Halo Series

The Halo Trilogy Complete Original Soundtrack collection is definitely a solid product. It includes the full soundtracks from the first and third games, plus mixes of the music from the second game, by level. To reiterate, Halo 2: The Original Soundtrack Volume 2 is included, but Halo 2: The Original Soundtrack VOLUME 1 IS NOT. This is the major complaint with the set, that the full tracks from the second game are NOT included.

That said, Volume 2 gives a good taste of how the entire game, as well as each individual level, feels. In addition to these soundtracks, a DVD about Halo Wars is included, with a few tracks and a making-of video included.  Overall, the soundtrack set is well worth the price. Purchasing this set and Halo 2: Volume 1 separately comes to about the same price as purchasing all three soundtracks individually, but without Halo 2: Volume 2 or the Halo Wars DVD.  -Amazon.com Review

 

3. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City

Anyone disillusioned with the greed and exploitation of the music industry can take some solice in this fantastic box set. Seven great CDs for an even better price. Believe me, this is the definition of worth the money. With beautiful packaging and neat little extras to boot!  Yes, some will complain about the tracks left off the soundtrack. Some omissions are so glaring, that one has to assume many were contractually motivated. No matter, though, as the soundtracks are still absurdly comprehensive and offer a great sampler of 80′s music with a healthy mix of big hits and underappreciated tracks.

“Four Little Diamonds” has quickly become a personal favorite, as has the awesome Romeo Void track “Never Say Never”. The broad variety of the seven discs make this a great addition to any CD collection, even if you haven’t played the game. From post-disco dance tracks, to the cool of Latin Jazz, to the calculated excess of pop and hard rock, to the morose stylings of New Wave and the urban poetry of early rap, this soundtrack set embodies the surprisingly rich musical diversity of the much malligned 80′s. I can’t think of anyone putting out such an eclectic and complete set as this. This hits all its spots, and I highly recommend it. -Amazon.com Review

 

2. Mass Effect

I think that people looking at this soundtrack will take little convincing to buy it. Like me, they probably thought that Mass Effect was absolutely brilliant and, at some stage, realised how much they liked the original music as well. Game soundtracks can be a bit weird – often not sounding as well on their own as when you actually played the game. Fortunately, the Mass Effect OST is mixed and sequenced well enough that it retains the qualities of its in-game counterpart.  

However, it isn’t without fault – when I went through it the first time (and a few other reviewers have already pointed this out), I was a bit shocked to realise that a few music pieces are missing altogether. These are mostly the minimal, ambient pieces you hear in different parts of the game, as well as some of the generic music you would hear when you were visiting the game’s many unchartered planets. This is unfortunate, because I actually liked some of these pieces of music more than the main quest and primary mission themes.  

Furthermore – and, again, others have pointed this out – the tracks mostly feature only one ‘loop’ of each stage in the compositions. So, all those intense little musical moments that would occur throughout a major combat setpiece (as in track 14: ‘Protecting the Colony’) seem very short here. Another example is track 3, ‘Eden Prime’ – a fantastic ambient composition that, at 1m 34s, is far too brief, and hardly does justice to the quality of the music.  

I am making the Mass Effect OST sound really disappointing when, truthfully, it is far from. However, it seems as though a second disc would have allowed the producer to put all of the game’s music on here and, on top of that, extend the compositions a little so it functions more as a stand-alone album, rather than a ‘best of’ compilation. All that aside, it is one of the best game soundtracks in years, and it is always great to see game music commercially available.  In short, buy it if you are a fan of Mass Effect, and loved its music. I’m a bit hesitant about recommending it to anyone else, however.  -Amazon.com Review

 

1. Final Fantasy X

This is the full IMPORT OST. Just check out how many songs it has on it. I purchased the smaller Domestic copy before i realized what i was getting into. I immediately turned around the found this copy to purchase. The music is fully orchestrated for the several pieces, some with smaller chamber ensembles. But on a whole i could tell that a lot was synthizised. The style of Final Fantasy X was leaning towards a more pop culture than it has ever before. FFX was no longer dealing with the Knights, Dragons and Black Chocobos that FF4 included, nor the classical style of FFIX.

The game itself had so many new things in it that the soundtrack had to have some new things, including the Otherworld (Zanarkand Blitzball Theme / Battle with Jehct Theme). One of the best things i have found with this soundtrack are the overworld themes, the world map music so to speak. Such as the Besaid theme, the Thunderplains theme … Such themes are perfect mood music to just have running in the low background for almost any occasion.

The soundtrack also has the Song of the Faith from each of the Aeons, including Yunalesca’s version, the Ronso Tribe version. Suteki Da Ne (Isn’t it Beaufitul) comes in two versions, all the specialized battle themes, such as the final battle with Seymour, and Yu-Yevon’s final bout.  It’s great, has some really good music on it. And the Chocobo Theme from FFX is one of the best Chocobo themes out there, right up there with the FFIX chocobo theme.  -Amazon.com Review

Great Part Time Jobs With Health Insurance Benefits

Part-time employment is often associated with foregone benefits including corporate discounts, paid vacations days and, of course health insurance. This happens because employers consider that part-time workers do not invest 100% of their time in the organization to reimburse for the high cost of health insurance. However, in the turbulent economic environment of today, there are companies that are interested in offering part-time jobs that combine flexibility with benefits in an effort to attract, but mostly retain hard-working, highly-qualified workers.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (http://www.bls.gov/), the jobs/companies that offer part-time employment with full-time benefits are the following:

a) Healthcare Sector

Hospitals and healthcare organizations offer full healthcare benefits because they want to hire highly-qualified employees. For instance, medical assistants receive, besides healthcare coverage, 401k retirement plans, pension, and paid vacation days, while they are also allowed to work flexible hours. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, medical assistant is one of the fastest growing professions today occupying numerous part-time employees in hospitals. Other careers in the healthcare sector that enjoy part-time employment with benefits are nurses, therapists and physicians.

b) Retail Sector

Considering part-time employment in the retail sector is one of the best deals. Because the retail sector is cyclical and highly affected by macro-economic conditions, nationwide retailers are willing to offer health insurance benefits to part-time employees in order to attract and retain them. c) National Delivery Companies

Package handlers at DHL, UPS and FedEx receive full healthcare benefits including dental care, vision care, disability insurance and life insurance for themselves and their dependants. To be fully eligible they have to complete one year at the company and work minimum 15 hours per week. Part-time employees at national delivery companies can also receive 401k plans and paid vacation time.

Overall, situation is changing for part-time employment and employees can enjoy both flexibility and benefits in certain jobs. For instance, besides the above mentioned options, for those who have a teaching experience and can prepare standardized tests for students, test preparation instructor is another alternative for part-time employment with health insurance benefits. Similarly, software companies seek for tech savvy part-time employees and offer them health insurance, among other benefits.

Adventurers Needed No Experience Possible Unlimited Salary Potential

You’ve all seen the want ad:  “Executives needed. Set your own hours, earn huge bonuses, 6+ figure income, travel. Prior management, college degree, and experience required.”

It sounded great, but you weren’t eligible. You either didn’t have the management experience needed (they wouldn’t count those 4 years of directing your first spouse’s life) or you weren’t sufficiently educated.  When I graduated high school, the upwardly mobile immediately entered college, no matter what the sacrifice.  It was their ticket to possibility.

Today, teenagers who understand software programming and computer related technology are snapping up the highest starting salaries. The catch in riding that wave is that you must be knowledgeable about computers.

If that’s not you, don’t despair. My headline, “Adventurers needed:  No Experience Possible.  Unlimited Salary Potential,” advertises the career possibility of becoming an independent contractor in MLM.

Some of you are rolling your eyes now. You want to inform me that your MLM career has not been lucrative so far and that your biggest adventure has been trying to collect a paycheck.

Dear readers, take heart.  You (yes, you!) have the potential to be the Bill Gates of MLM.  Right now, in the year 2005, you are at the brink of an industry still in its infancy.  This is the magnetism of MLM — and if you can hang in there, learning the nuances of a young industry — then you can be one of its brightest superstars in time.

Only a handful of people in the world understand this embryonic niche field the way pros like my husband, Taylor Hegan, and I do.  Few people in the world have made both a four figure income or higher with several companies and earned in excess of a million dollars as a distributor, thus having a diversity of MLM experience with the “credentials” to demonstrate it.

Whether you count yourself in on that elite group or not, you can train with those who have that fundamental understanding of our industry, and you will then be qualified to call yourself on the “bleeding edge.”

To prepare yourself for extraordinary accomplishments in MLM, you must focus on industry mastery, not the end result of that mastery (money and the numbers of people).  When I mention the importance of this to typical industry “students,” if they are successful already they agree, “Absolutely, no question!”  If they have not yet made any money in the business, they reply, “Oh those so-called masters are all alike.  A lot of hype about nuts and bolts and no substance.”

Use this checklist to get yourself in the MLM game more powerfully:

1.) Read and listen to current industry experts and personal development mentors at least 20 minutes daily;

2.) Attend all your company’s major functions;

3.) Use your company’s products and/or services everyday;

4.) Focus on your potential customers’ needs;

5.) Learn every aspect of your craft from retailing to training to marketing;

6.) Be the sponsor you wish you had;

7.) Never knock a system until you have given it an adequate trial test;

8.)  Maintain all the business elements that you master as you take on new skill sets one at a time;

9.) Do exactly what your top company money earner is doing for at least 6 months without any deviation;

10.) Eliminate criticism, emphasize positives;

11.) Notice all the exciting, yet ordinary, accomplishments you see — an ice carving on a buffet, decorated cake, beautiful painting — and consider the many futile tries that probably preceded the “masterpiece”;

12.) Stay focused, focused, focused and driven to be the best you can be in the industry, NO MATTER WHAT!!!

At best, only 2 out of 100 people reading this will do more than shrug off this advice.  But, if you are one of those 2 people, you’ll feel richly blessed knowing that I wrote this column just for you . . . And reading it will have changed your career in MLM forever.

Manage Neck Pain Through Pain Management

People at any age may acquire neck pain. Besides a direct injury to the neck, there are several other reasons, which produce neck pain. The intensity of neck pain varies from one person to the other depending upon the condition and circumstances. A patient remains in discomfort and restlessness, and he could not take part in his daily activities easily. The first and prime concern in the treatment of neck problems is the reduction of pain. There are different modalities via which pain is controlled.

Before prescribing any painkiller to the patient, he is strictly advised to take the rest as per requirement. It has usually been seen that the pain reduces considerably, if the appropriate rest is taken. Besides taking rest for the whole body, patients are also advised to wear a cervical or neck collar in order to provide rest to the muscles of the neck. Patients are also advised to apply cold packs at the neck muscles so that the inflammation and swelling over there could be reduced considerably. Once the swelling is declined, patients are advised to apply hot packs to the muscles of the neck so that the blood circulation to that area would be increased. These measures reduce neck pain considerably and a patient comes out easily from his state of distress and discomfort.

Painkillers are necessary in the management of neck pain. Initially, the easily available painkillers like acetaminophen are prescribed, which possess least side effects. However; every patient doesn’t get better results from these painkillers. Therefore; majority of the patients is required to get Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs). If the pain does not settle with NSAIDs, then high potency steroidal painkillers are given in the form of injections. These injections are directly applied at the muscles of the neck. Via virtue of these injections, the pain and inflammation settle promptly. If the pain still persists, patients are given narcotic analgesics in different potencies. In some forms, these narcotic analgesics are given directly into the spinal cord. Epidural analgesia is a form of pain management in which a catheter is placed in the outer layer (epidural) of spinal cord. The drugs then injected by means of these catheters directly into the spinal cord.

The application of TENS machine is considered when the conventional painkillers remain unsuccessful in the provision of relief from pain. Interferential pain machine could be used instead of TENS machine and it is also marvelous in the provision of relief from pain. Surgical denervation is the other option which is adopted in those cases where pain does not settle with all non-surgical methods. In general, the application of surgical method is not required since the majority of the patients get relief from conventional medications.

How to Write a Review of a Non-Fiction Book

Nonfiction works come in varying topics and formats.  Similar to the way you review a fiction work, ask yourself “What am I looking for in this book”.  Non-fiction works are written to impart some information or knowledge to the reader based on fact.  Nonfiction works typically will have some sort of citable references.  The author will have some or experience or expertise in the topic.  A non-fiction work should be accurate, on topic, and the author should cite their references.  Does the book meet these requirements?

1)            Write out the purpose of the book.  What is the topic?  How broad is the topic?  How specific is the topic?  Does the author stay on topic or branch off into other topics?

2)            Write about the accuracy of the book.  Does the author cite credible sources?  Does the author have experience or education in that particular topic?  Does the author give opinion disguised as fact or distort the facts to fit his opinion?

3)            Write out the tone of the book.  Did the author use humorous tones to entertain while reading?  Is this a strictly informative work? Did the tone of the book sufficiently match the topic of the non-fiction work?

4)            Write out your opinion of the book.  Did the author achieve the objective you were looking for?  Did he provide sufficient detail or simply present a broad overview of the topic at hand? Was the information accurate?  Would you look forward to reading future works by this author? Did the author present visually appealing photos or graphics (if applicable)?
