10. Flower

Flower is a PlayStation 3 video game. It was developed by thatgamecompany, designed by Jenova Chen and Nicholas Clark, and announced at the 2007 Tokyo Game Show. Flower was released on February 12, 2009, via the PlayStation Network. The game was intended as a “spiritual successor” to Flow, a previous title by Chen and thatgamecompany.

In it, the player controls the wind, blowing a flower petal through the air using the movement of the game controller. Flying close to flowers results in the player’s petal being followed by other flower petals. Approaching flowers may also have side-effects on the game world, such as bringing vibrant color to previously dead fields or activating stationary windmills. The game features no text or dialogue, forming a narrative arc primarily through visual representation and emotional cues.

Flower was primarily intended to arouse positive emotions in the player, rather than to be a challenging and “fun” game. This focus was sparked by Chen, who felt that the primary purpose of entertainment products like video games was the feelings that they evoked in the audience, and that the emotional range of most games was very limited. The team viewed their efforts as creating a work of art, removing gameplay elements and mechanics that were not provoking the desired response in the players.

The music, composed by Vincent Diamante, dynamically responds to the player’s actions and corresponds with the emotional cues in the game. Flower was a critical success, to the surprise of the developers. Reviewers praised the game’s music, visuals, and gameplay, calling it a unique and compelling emotional experience. It was named the “best independent game of 2009″ at the Spike Video Game Awards and by Playboy, and won the “Casual Game of the Year” award by the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences. -Wikipedia.org

9. Batman: Arkham Asylum

Batman: Arkham Asylum is an action-adventure stealth video game based on DC Comics’ Batman for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Microsoft Windows. It was developed by Rocksteady Studios and published by Eidos Interactive in conjunction with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and DC Comics. The PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game were released on August 25, 2009 in North America and August 28, 2009 in Europe, and the PC version was released on September 15 in North America and on September 18 in Europe.

Arkham Asylum, written by veteran Batman writer Paul Dini, is based on the long-running comic book mythos, as opposed to most other Batman games which are adaptations of the character in other media besides the source material. The Joker, Batman’s arch enemy, has instigated an elaborate plot from within Arkham Asylum where many of Batman’s other villains have been incarcerated. Batman investigates and comes to learn that the Joker is trying to create an army of Bane-like creatures to threaten Gotham City, and is forced to put a stop to the Joker’s plans. The game’s main characters are voiced by the actors from the DC Animated Universe, namely Kevin Conroy, Mark Hamill, and Arleen Sorkin reprising their roles as Batman, the Joker, and Harley Quinn, respectively. The game is played as a third-person perspective action-adventure game with a primary focus on Batman’s combat abilities, his stealth and detective skills, and an arsenal of gadgets that can be used in both combat and exploration.

The game received high praise from critics, earning a 92% average on GameRankings, a game aggregator. The game also holds a Guinness World Record for ‘Most Critically Acclaimed Superhero Game Ever’, with an average score of 91.67 from reviewers. Several awards were given to Arkham Asylum, including a Spike Video Game Award and the coveted Best Game BAFTA Award. A sequel, titled “Batman: Arkham City”, was announced at the 2009 Spike Video Game Awards. On May 11, 2010, a Game of the Year version of Batman: Arkham Asylum was released in the United States. This edition includes four new challenge maps and is packaged with two pairs of glasses which may be used to play the game in 3D on any regular 2D television, using TriOviz, a new kind of anaglyph image technique. -Wikipedia.org

Playing the ?Switch? Card Game

Before there was a card game called Uno, there was a great game called Switch which families have enjoyed for generations. The Uno game utilizes the Switch rules and has created purpose designed cards but originally the game was played with an ordinary deck of 52playing cards plus the 2 Jokers. Below is a run down of what the different cards represent in the game.

The aim of the game is to be the first to get rid of all their cards. Players are dealt 7 cards each and the remainder are placed in a deck in the middle of the table. Players play their cards onto the table next to the deck by following suit or number/value of the preceding card. To make the game interesting certain cards have special properties as listed below.

Joker: Will cause the next person to take up 5 cards from the pack, and enable the person playing it to select the suit to continue in the game. Should the next person play a Two of the correct suit or another Joker, the sum of the two cards is passed on to the next player. Ace: By placing an ace on the table it will change the suit tabled to the suit of that ace.

Jack: By placing a Jack on the table it will cause the next person to skip their turn. The Jack can only be placed on the correct suit or another Jack. Eight: By placing an Eight on the table the direction of play is reversed. The Eight can only be played on the correct suit or another Eight.

Two: This will cause the next person to take up two cards from the pack, unless he/she plays another two or a Joker, whereupon the next person will take up the sum of the two cards, in this case 7 cards. However, if the next person has a 2 then it follows on. Some games play the Three card also. These cards must be played on the correct suits, except for the Joker, after which the new suit is nominated at the same time.

When one player has gotten rid of all their cards and has just one left they are required to knock loudly on the table to let the other players know. If they don’t notify others like this they cannot play their last card and win.

Scoring: this can be done in various ways but they usually involve a penalty for the value of cards left in hand. Cards are worth their face value except for the above cards which have a higher value of demerit if they are still in hand. Joker-50, Ace-20, Jack-15, Eight-10, Three-35, Two-30. Winner of the game gets 100. Players can set a total to reach to win the series of games.

Boyfriend Gift Guide: Computer games

from mat4226

In this hub I will be sharing about a guy’s perspective on receiving computer games as a gift, and whether this gift is a good buy for girlfriends and wives to give to their boyfriend or husband.

Computer games have become so popular, even with girls and ladies these days, as games become more interactive and real. Especially with Nintendo WII, which has multiple games that engages both gender easily, and clearly now computer games are not boys’ play anymore.

Yet, in our sharing today, I hope to let readers know whether computer games can be a good gift or not. That’s because being a gamer myself, many guys have problems taking off their eyes from their computer screens just to take a good look at their girlfriend or wife standing beside them.

Boyfriend Gift Guide: Computer games

As we all know, many guys are into computer games. So is buying a computer games as a gift for your boyfriend or husband a wise choice?

My recommendation: No!

Now, you may ask, why is that so?

There are numerous reasons computer games make a bad gift for your boyfriend. I shall list some of them down for you.

#1: If your boyfriend or husband is a gamer, there are chances that they are too taken up in their game, they may find it difficult to spend time with you.

I have heard of boyfriends who skipped a date with their girlfriends just to spend time with their game at home.

Many ladies wonder why do guys value computer games so much. That is because many times computer games is an ‘escape zone’, to escape from the harsh realities of the world or situations, and where the guy playing the game is his own master.

Therefore, for a guy gamer, pride and identity of the gamer is built up in their games, and when they lose a game, they get emotionally upset, but if they win, they are happy. It is not just mere entertainment anymore.

Computer games became the self-esteem of many gamers in today’s world.

So if your boyfriend or husband is a gamer, do take note of this.

Anyway, there are guys and people who just play computer games for the fun of it, and they care not whether they win nor lose. So what I am speaking about here is for gamers who are just too taken up by computer games.

And if your boyfriend or husband is the person who isn’t taken up by computer games too much, it would be okay to buy a computer game for him.

In a nutshell, if buying a computer game gift for your boyfriend or husband doesn’t help you spend time with him, or if it doesn’t really cause him to remember you, choose other gifts instead.

#2: If you do not enjoy computer games much, you will feel pretty left out when your boyfriend or husband is playing their computer games.

That is pretty true for many ladies. Many girlfriends or wives do not like to see their beloved boyfriend or husband paying attention before a computer screen rather than them.

So if you are not into computer games, why would you want to buy a computer game for your boyfriend or husband?

#3: Computer games are easily available from a game shop. Even if you don’t buy them, your boyfriend or husband will get it for themselves.

Yes, this is true if your boyfriend or husband is a gamer. They will naturally get computer games for themselves.

And it really isn’t really romantic to give a computer game to your boyfriend or husband. Hence it shouldn’t be given during very important dates like Valentine’s Day or your one year anniversary gift for your boyfriend or husband.

Rather, it would be an ideal gift for a gift exchange for Christmas, since it is a gift exchange.

When should you give a computer game gift for your boyfriend or husband?

1. When your boyfriend or husband is going away for a trip, and you do not want him bored during his trip.

That’s if you know your boyfriend or husband is bringing his laptop or his handheld console with him during the trip.

2. If the computer game helps you to spend time with your boyfriend or husband, and that you enjoy it yourself.

Games like Wii Sports or interactive games are great ideas to spend time with your boyfriend or husband, and it would be a good idea if the game allows you to spend quality time together with your boyfriend or husband.

3. If your boyfriend or husband is hinting so much about it, that he is putting up sign posts in his room.

Well, it would be nice to give in to him once in a while to your boyfriend’s or husband’s expectations. It wouldn’t hurt.

Final words for this article

For the upcoming Christmas celebration, it is okay to look for a computer game as a Christmas gift if it is a gift exchange.

However if you are looking for a more romantic setting, please avoid computer games as a gift for your boyfriend or husband.

Anyway that’s all for this article. If any reader wishes to contribute boyfriend gift ideas to share with others, please do it with the comments page.

This article is slightly edited and taken from my blog at BoyfriendGiftIdeas.org, where I blog about boyfriend gift ideas for loving girlfriends and wives.

What would you give your boyfriend for Christmas to make it truly memorable?

Playing the ?Oh Hell? Card Game

I know that the ‘H’ word is a ‘cuss’ word in some circles, but as I am from down under it is simply an exclamation and you can use it in this game. If you find it too offensive you can cal it ‘oh dang’ also. This is a good card game to bring people together. It enables you to make predictions on how you think the hand will play out.

Decide the order of suits which you will be playing and stick to this order. The first rule is that the player need not follow suit but the winning card is the highest card tabled, and there are no trump cards.

For the first hand deal in either direction 10 cards to each player face down on the table.

Each player picks through his cards and estimates how many tricks, or hands they will likely win out of the ten tricks to be played in that hand.

Once the player has decided how many tricks he/she will win, all players show with their fingers at the same time how many tricks they will win. The score keeper writes down each players estimation of tricks they expect to win. The fun here is that out of 10 tricks the total may amount to more tricks than what is available.

The hand is played with the first person to the left of the dealer leading with a card of his/her choice., and each trick that is won is placed next to the player who won it. Players must win only the number of tricks they nominate and no less or more.

The next hand is dealt with 9 cards each and the same rigmarole is followed. Each hand after that decreases by one card until players are dealt with one card each. As you can imagine it gets quite exciting when only one card is available.

Scoring; each trick is worth 10 points and if the player achieves the number of tricks nominated, they get a bonus 20. If they don’t achieve the correct number of tricks then -10 is deducted for each nominated trick that they didn’t get or got over. eg if they nominated 4 and got only 3, they lose -10. If they got 6 then they lose -20.

The players can set the winning total to aim for to finish the game. A good total to start with is 300 to win.

Halo 3: ODST – A Must Have Xbox Game

Halo 3: ODST is the newest game in the popular Halo series. Exclusively for the Xbox 360, it was released in September 2009, approximately 2 years after the release of Halo 3. Upon its release, the game quickly became the top-selling game for the Xbox 360 worldwide.

Originally, the game was developed as a small side project to give fans something new in between the release of Halo 3 and Halo: Reach. For this reason, instead of focusing on the characters that are familiar from the earlier Halo games, this game centers around the ODSTs, Orbital Drop Shock Troopers.

In the game, players take on the personas of these Orbital Drop Shock Troopers who are top human United Nations Space Command soldiers. Their job is to find out what happened to their missing comrades in the city of New Mombasa. The teammates have been separated from each other upon entering the city after a group of aliens attacked Earth, wreaking havoc and chaos.

As the game was in development, it evolved from a mini-game into a full-fledged full-length game. But, because it is played from the perspective of a different character than the other Halo games, it has a different and unique feel to it. It has elements of film noir with a jazz-inspired musical background theme. Despite, or perhaps due to, the deviations from the other Halo games, Halo 3: ODST has proven tremendously popular and has received mostly positive reviews.

At the start of the game, the player assumes the role of a soldier called “Rookie.” Rookie is tasked with finding his missing teammates and searches for clues. As clues are found and answers are revealed, the player then assumes the role of the missing soldier. The player has a lot of choice in terms of where to go and what to do, so the game is experienced differently for each player.

As missions are accomplished, additional characters are unlocked and players are able to choose which character they would like to be. Players also win medals for jobs well done and can track their score over time.

The game itself has a complicated story behind it that follows chronologically from the other games in the Halo series. In Halo 2, a group of alien races called the Covenant discovered the location of Earth and attacked the city of New Mombasa. While most of the attackers were repelled, one ship managed to land and then retreated, causing a shockwave that destroyed part of New Mombasa. Halo 3: ODST takes place in the aftermath of the shockwave while the Covenant is occupying the city.

The game begins as 4 ODSTs are planning an assault on the Covenant`s ship outside New Mombasa. A series of events occur, causing the ODSTs to crash and be separated. As Rookie, game players need to explore the city and sort through clues to find the missing ODSTs. The game is completed when everyone has been found safe and sound.

In addition to the exciting gameplay, there are some neat sound and special effects built into the game. Clearly the developers had fun putting it all together and the results are great.

The Card Game of Briscola

It is not quite certain where any why this card game originated. Some sources claim it was older French soldiers who invented the game; others say it was a Dutch game created by sailors to pass the time during long voyages. Yet another source says that the game underwent such changes to be now considered a typical Italian card game.

Independently of where and why it originated, this card game is now known and played in Italy and among many Italian communities across the globe.

It is a fun card game which requires skill and good memory.

It is played with 40 cards. Italians use a special 40 card deck with suits different than your typical deck of cards. However, you can create your set from the 52 card deck by eliminating all the jokers, the tens, the nines, and the eights.

This card game is generally played with 2, 3 or 4 players, although there are options to be played with 5 and 6 players.

The goal of the game is to earn as many points as possible. The individual with the most points wins.

The cards are assigned value points as follows:
Aces are worth 11 points
Threes are worth 10 points
Kings are worth 4 points
Queens are worth 3 points
Jacks are worth 2 points

All the other cards have no face value, but they do count in winning a hand based on their numerical score. For example a 7 will win a turn over a 6, a 5, a 4, or a 2 (if of the same suit); however, it does not add points to the total score.

The total of points available in a game is 120: 4 aces equal 44 points, 4 threes equal 40 points, 4 kings equal 16 points, 4 queens equal 12 points, and 4 jacks equal 8 points.

When played with 2 or 3 players, each player is responsible for his own points. When there are 4 players, then the game can be played in teams. In this last case, two players are responsible for earning as many points as possible for their team.

To win a game, when played with 2 players, one of the players has to earn a minimum of 61 points (half the total plus one); when played with 3 players, the minimum necessary for a win is 41; when 4 players play, if each player wants to play on his own, the minimum necessary for the win is 31; if, however, the game is played with two teams of two, then each team has to score at least 61 points.

The original Italian version of the game is played by distributing three cards to each player and placing the remaining cards face down on the table.

Each game will have a trump suit, which will beat all other suits independently of the point value of the individual cards. The trump suit is determined by the top card that is picked from the remaining deck and placed face up on the table.

First to place a card on the table is the player on the left of the dealer, then the play proceeds clockwise.

The card to play will be the one that, based on the player’s best guess, will win over all other cards played in the round.
Before we proceed with an example, you may want to get a set of cards and follow the game along with the cards as you read the explanation.

Here is a summary of the main rules:
1. the trump suit wins over all other cards during the game
2. within the trump suit the cards retain their rank; therefore, the trump king will win over the trump queen but not over the trump ace or three.
3. the higher ranking cards win over their lower ranking counterparts within the suit
4. to win a round you either have to outrank within the same suit or use a trump card
5. the game is over when all the cards have been played
6. the winner has to have at least 61 points (in a two players game).

Now to the example:
The card that was turned face up on the table is the five of ♥.
♥, therefore, will be the trump suit.

Let’s suppose that the other player dealt the cards and that the three cards you have in your hands are
the ace of ♦ (11 points),
the two of ♣ (no value),
and the king of ♥ (4 points and trump value).

Because the opponent dealt the cards, it is your turn to go first. With the cards you have, it would be better to open the game with the two of ♣, not knowing what cards the other player has.

Now, let’s look at the cards the opponent has. The other player has
the ace of ♣ (11 points),
the three of ♥ (10 points and trump value),
and the seven of ♣ (no value).
His best move would be to play the ace of ♣, because it outranks your two of ♣ (just like the seven would) and it earns 11 points (unlike the seven, which would take the card but give no points).

At this point, the opponent wins that round and earns 11 points. He would then pick a card from the top of the deck (then you pick yours) and he opens the second round. He still has
the seven of ♣ (no value),
the three of ♥ (10 points and trump value),
and has now added a five of ♦ (no value).

You still have
the king of ♥ (4 points and trump card),
the king of ♦ (4 points),
and you picked the queen of ♠ (3 points).

The opponent then plays the seven of ♣. You have no ♣ at all so you have the choice of either letting him win some points, or using your trump card.
If you choose the first option, your best move would be to let go of the card that will give him the least amount of points, the queen of ♠ (3 points). He wins the round and pockets 3 points for a total now of 14 points.
If you choose the second option, then you would play your king of ♥ and win 4 points. However, keep in mind that the king of the trump suit is the third highest ranking card for that particular game.

Let’s say that you choose to give up the queen of ♠. The opponent once again picks first a card from the deck and this time he gets the ace of ♠. The card you pick is the four of ♥.

He now has
the three of ♥ (10 points and trump value),
the five of ♦ (no value),
and the ace of ♣ (11 points).

You have
the king of ♥ (4 points and trump card),
the king of ♦ (4 points),
and the four of ♥ (no value but trump card).

Your opponent decides to play the five of ♦. You can play the king of ♦, win that turn and earn 4 points (thus keeping both your trump cards). It will then be your turn to pick the top card first and open the round.

Basically, you want to play one of the trump cards only when you are holding all trumps (in which case you want to play the lowest of them), when playing any of the other cards would cause you to lose either 11 or 10 points (although at times losing those points may be the best strategy), or when it is the only way to get points (because you do not have a higher ranking card of the same suit as the one played by the opponent).

If you can win points by taking the other player’s card by using his same suit, then it would be better to make that choice. Let’s say, for example, that your opponent plays the jack of ♣ (2 points) and you hold the king of ♣ (4 points), it would work best for you to play the king of ♣ and earn 6 points. Let’s say that you hold the king and the ace of ♣ (11 points), it would be better to choose the ace and win 13 points.

The game will end when you have played all the cards from the deck and the ones you have in your hands. The player with the most points wins.

It is a fun game and you will get better at it and more astute by playing it often.
