The National Genealogy Society (America) has stated, “Family history is now the second most popular hobby in the United States, after gardening. (1) If you are one of the millions of people who is interested in researching your genealogy but don’t know where to start, I was in your shoes a few years ago. Now I’m well on my way to having a book published! To give any genealogy newbies a head start on researching their family tree and family history, I offer these eleven tips.
Start researching your genealogy today. Genealogy is one of those things the longer you put it off, the harder it will be to find out simple details. Who are your parent’s cousins? Who were your grandparent’s siblings? Who is that woman in the family photo next to Aunt Jane? What was Aunt Jane’s maiden name? The sooner you start researching, the more people you will have still alive and able to help you.
Begin researching your genealogy with your immediate family and work outwards from there. Write down some of those dull stories Grandpa or Uncle Bob are always telling. Ask them who their siblings, parents, aunts and uncles and cousins were. Go through old family photos with them. Write down all the names. Ask them if you can photocopy their marriage certificate and birth certificate and if they have any old records, journals, documents, old wills, or letters you can copy.
Family Bibles are a great place to research genealogy as they often contain birth and death records as well as marriages and children.
Move on to the internet to research your genealogy and family history, but DON’T believe everything you see posted online for your family tree! The biggest mistake a rookie researcher makes is copying and pasting a family tree they find online and thinking it must be accurate because the family tree was published online. Use online references to help you get started, but do your own research and find documentation on each branch of the family tree.
Two of the many places online to research your genealogy and check for family history information are http://www.ancestery.com and http://www.genealogy.com. Another great place to search for newspaper records is NewspaperARCHIVES.com.
Use Google to research your genealogy and family history and search for records of your family.
Begin your real genealogy and family history research at the Public Library. Many libraries have sections devoted to genealogy and local history where you will find a wealth of resources.
Cemeteries are another place research your family history and genealogy by finding birth and death records as well as to identify spouses and children. Much of this is engraved on tombstones, and other data you can piece together by who is buried next to whom.
School records can be helpful in researching your family history, I got quite a bit of help finding old photos and details about my father as well as two of my uncles by tracking down the alumni association of their high school. The high school was closed before I was born, but they still had an alumni associate, and that association provided me with a photo of an uncle who died before I was born and of whom we had no photos.
State, city and county records are very helpful in researching your family history. You can order wills and other documents from the correct government offices.
Military records are a great way to research the history of any vets in your family. There are websites and other resources online and through the various military branches if any of your family served in the military.
If you use these tips as a starting point as you begin to research your family history, and remember research is never as simple as copying and pasting what you find online, you will be ahead of the game as you begin the rewarding task of piecing together your family history and family tree.
