Ten Great Canadian Movie Stars

Like many other people, I love to sit back and watch a good movie to relax. Well recently after watching a great new horror flick it got me thinking about Canadian movie stars and which were my absolutely favourites. Therefore, I did some researching, dug up old memories, came up with this list of 10 past, and present Canadian movie stars, which I grew up watching. Here are Canada‘s Best Known Movie Stars enjoy.

Leslie Nielsen

He was born February 11, 1926 in Regina, Saskatchewan.
Leslie Nielsen has been in over 50+ movies and even more television shows but his movie career started with the movie “Airplane” in the 1980’s where Nielsen plays an oddball doctor. His father was a Royal Canadian Mountie and his brother was a high-ranking Canadian politician that eventually went on to be the Deputy Prime Minister of Canada. The Nielsen family has produced nothing but great people. Everyone of Leslie Nielsen’s movies I have seen over the years were all a good laugh and for this, is why he’s one of my favourite Canadian movie stars.

Michael J. Fox

Was born June 9, 1961 in Edmonton, Alberta Canada. Michael J. Fox is probably one of Canada’s best-known stars. I remember growing up watching him in Family Ties, then years later seeing him again in the Back to the Future Movies. Michael J. Fox has appeared in many movies and televisions shows through his acting career and won a number of awards through the years. In early 1991 while filming the movie Doc Hollywood, Fox noticed his finger was twitching. After a few hours of this with no signs of letting up, Fox decided to see a doctor and was diagnosed with Parkinson’s.  After that, Michael became somewhat self-conscious about his handshakes and started to hide his hands on his television show Spin City. After that, Michael pretty much dropped out of the movie scene but is an avid supporter of stem cell research. Michael J. Fox will always be recognized as one of Canada’s and my favourite movie stars.

Mike Myers

Born May 25, 1963 in Scarborough, Ontario is one of Canada’s biggest and best-known movie stars. Mike Myers hit stardom with such movies as Wayne’s World, Austin Powers, So I Married an Axe Murderer, Shrek and let us not forget Saturday Night Live, which is where his career pretty much started. Myers has gone on to produce his own movies and has won many awards for the roles and movies he has made. Michael Myers is another one of Canada’s great movie stars.

Rachel McAdams

In London, Ontario Canada on October 7, 1976 Rachel McAdams was born.  She started out at a younger age doing competitive figure skating but later got interested in theatre and the arts. She started her television career on the Disney’s series “The Famous Jett Jackson” in 1998 and did a pilot for MTV before starting in the movie “Hot Chick”. Although she had a major part in this movie, her movie career did not really take off until Rachel started in the movie “Mean Girls” in 2004 and “The Note Book” also in 2004. Since then Rachel has went on to make other movies like “Redeye” and has appeared on many television shows. Rachel McAdams is one of Canada’s growing successful movie stars and she is one of my favourites.

Phil Hartman

Born on September 24, 1948 in Brantford, Ontario and died May 28, 1998 Phil Hartman was an actor, comedian and writer. Hartman did a lot in the short time he had on this planet. Surrounded by unusually circumstances to this day, no one knows why Phil Hartman’s wife took his life and her own but he is truly missed here in his homeland of Canada. Hartman contributed too many things through out his life but the best he is known for is his role on “Saturday Night Live” and “News Talk Radio” as well as many voices on the Simpson’s cartoon. Phil Hartman will always be remembered as one of Canada’s great stars.

John Candy

Born on October 31, 1950 Canadian movie star John Candy was born. Although I do not remember any of John’s early work, I do remember seeing him in other movies like “Uncle Buck”. John Candy made a ton of television appearances through out his life and was a huge sports fan. In 1991 John Candy, Wayne Gretzky and Bruce McNall became co-owners of the Toronto Argonauts, which won the Grey Cup in the first year they owned the team. John Candy also opened a chain of blues restaurants with Dan Aykroyd and Jim Belushi. On March 4, 1994, John Candy died of a massive heart attack in his sleep while filming the movie “Wagons East”. John Candy is one of Canada’s older movie stars that will always be remembered for his work in the film industry.

Jim Carrey

Canadian funny man Jim Carrey was born January 17, 1962 in Newmarket Ontario. Although Carrey was considered for a part in Saturday Night Live he was eventually turned down for Mike Myers. Jim Carrey did manage to go on and start his career as an on stage comedian before joining the television show called “In Living Color”. While on this show, Carrey created and mastered a number of different personalities and impersonations. Eventually Jim Carrey’s career exploded with his movie “Ace Venture”. After that it, Jim Carrey went on to do many other movies, projects and television appearances. He is where today because of hard work and the drive to be successful are. Jim Carrey is one of Canada’s most successful movie stars and absolutely one of my favourite movie stars of all time.

Ryan Reynolds

Canadian movie star Ryan Reynolds was born October 23, 1976 in Vancouver, British Columbia. Ryan got his start on a television program known as “Hillside” in 1990, which was taped in Florida with many other Canadians. This only lasted for two and a half years before Ryan returned home to Vancouver. After returning to B.C, Ryan had a few small parts in a couple of television programs but by 1996, Ryan had decided to give up acting.  Shortly after quitting acting Ryan had bumped into an old friend that talked him into moving down to Los Angeles, California. Shortly after arriving, the two stayed in a cheap motel and Ryan’s jeep had its doors stolen off it. For about 3 to 4 months, Ryan drove the jeep like this. Until finally in 1997 he landed the role of Berg in the television comedian program called “Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place. After this Ryan went on to star in such films as “Van Wilder’, “Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle”, “Amityville Horror”, “Blade Trinity” and many more. Ryan has come along way over the years and has built himself a successful career from his acting and this is the main reason he is one of my favourite Canadian movie stars.

Ryan Gosling

Young movie star Ryan Gosling was born on November 12, 1980 in London, Ontario. Ryan’s television career started when he was picked out of thousands of other children to be on the “Mickey Mouse Show”. While appearing on this program Ryan had worked and lived with other famous celebrities like Brittany Spears, Justin Timberlake and Christina Aguilera. After this Ryan went on to do a number of different television series like “Young Hercules” and “Breaker high. It was soon after this that Ryan started to appear in a number of movies and he eventually became a hit in the states. He was in such movies as “Murder by Numbers”, “The Slaughter Rule”, “Remember the Titans” and many more. Ryan has worked hard to get where he is today and he deserves to be recognized as one of Canada’s biggest stars.

William Shatner

Born March 22, 1931 in Montreal, Quebec William Shatner is Canada’s if not the World’s most recognized Movie Star of all time. William Shatner has spent over 50 years in the movie and television career. He has played in “Outer Limits”, “Twilight Zone”, “Alfred Hitchcock Presents” and others through out the sixties until eventually he excepted a role on “Star Trek” in 1966 which made William Shatner a house hold name. Shatner has been in many movies like “Miss Congeniality” and “Loaded Weapon 1” and so many more. Although William Shatner has done all these movies and television shows, the one thing he will always be remembered for will be his role as “Captain Kirk” in “Star Trek”. In my personal opinion even though I don’t really like William Shatner he will always be remembered as one of Canada’s greatest movie/television stars long after he is gone.

The first step for everyone is to get in tune with your immune system.  We are all given an immune system that is the bodies defense mechanism and it engineers the healing process.  No matter what our role is in life, we all want to be healthy and getting to know your immune system and keeping it tuned up is important to maintain a healthy life.

I watch the  news and search the internet and constantly learn about movie stars  and entertainers suffering from cancer, multiple sclerosis, leukemia and lupus; just to name a few.  It leads me to believe that there could be some common triggers that are making them sick.  One should do their homework before accepting a role, and they can find out what chemicals, makeup, props and lighting they will be exposed to.  If they find the exposure will adversely affect their health and immune system, then perhaps they should decline the offer.

The skin is the bodies largest organ and the skin easily absorbs what is put on it.  Stars must wear costumes made from all sorts of harsh chemicals and fabrics with glitter and glues.  Some costumes do not even allow the skin to breathe and they are required to wear them for extremely long periods of time.  Stars must make major decisions that could ultimately affect their health.

Stars are also constantly exposed to facial and body makeup.  Some are covered in makeup for hours, days weeks and monthls trying to complete a film.  They should research the products being used and use as many natural products as possible.

Stage lighting and special affects can also damage the skin and weaken the immune system.  Before accepting a role, they should investigate what type of exposure they will have to lighting and chemicals. They should also find out how the makeup and costumes they are wearing will affect their skin while under the lighting.

Movie stars and entertainers are extremely hard workers and many of them will go from one project to the next without giving their body a break and getting the proper rest.  They should take the time and let their body heal and also deplete their body from toxic buildup by resting and cleansing their system.

We appreciate all of the  hard work, time and energy that actors, actresses and singers take to entertain us.  It is even more thrilling to know that they are healthy and living a happy and long life with their family and friends.  I encourage them to use caution in the entertainment business and get in tune with their immune system.

Great places for adventure travel in the US

Were can you go to Walt Disney World, the oldest European settlement in North America, America’s launch pad for space shuttles, and the beach all in one day? If you guessed Florida then you are right

Florida was founded in 1513 by Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Len Who called it “Feast of flowers”, also known as Florida. Florida was later made part of the United Sates of America in 1845. Florida’s climate is very warm making it a great place to travel to from up north to get some of the warm weather. Florida is also a great place to travel to because of some of the great theme parks such as Disney World, Sea World, and Bush Gardens. Another reason Florida is a great travel destination is because of all of the beautiful coastline of Florida stretching 1,197 miles on the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf coast. Because of the beaches there are tons more of recreational activities to do such as surfing, sailing, snorkeling, boogie-boarding, boating, and skim boarding. Another great tourist spot is the Florida Keys because of the variety of wildlife and fish, the great weather, and the crystal clear water that surrounds the islands in the Caribbean Sea. Some of the large cities in Florida are Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Tampa; the largest of them all is the city of Miami witch is home to 3,876,380 people. The capital of Florida is Tallahassee. The government of Florida consists of a Governor and a cabinet consisting of Attorney General, Chief Financial Officer, and Commissioner of Agriculture. The Governor of Florida is currently Jeb Bush, our president’s brother. Because of the many tourist venues in Florida it is one of the most traveled to states in all of America. It is also ranked number four in the U.S. for population witch was 16 million people in 2000. Florida is well known for its colleges. Some of them are: The University of Miami, The University of South Florida, Florida State University, and University of Florida. The two biggest are Florida and Florida State. Now to some of Florida’s geography and resources, the geography of Florida is mostly flat land with occasional hills, lakes, rivers, and valleys. Florida’s total land area is 58,560 square miles which puts Florida in 22nd rank for land in the United States. Florida’s length north to south is 447 miles stretching from the St. Marys River to Key West. The width of Florida east to west is 361 miles stretching from the Atlantic Ocean to the Perdido River. The highest natural point of Florida is 345 feet. Florida also has a lot of coastline going 1,197 miles on the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf coast.

Although Florida is one of the most popular destinations for tourists in all of America, I think that is also one of the best states to live in.

Were can you go to Walt Disney World, the oldest European settlement in North America, America’s launch pad for space shuttles, and the beach all in one day? If you guessed Florida then you are right

If you’re a baby boomer, you’re part of a very special population.  Your parents were generally folks who had come through the Second World War and reared you with a combination of war-tested toughness and idealistic tenderness. We became disillusioned as we grew up because we found so many inequities and awful realities in the world. But we eventually settled back into more traditional roles in society. However, our youthful curiosity had initiated significant travel, and we vowed to ourselves that someday we would explore the planet in all its gritty reality, and we would also try to do some good.

About 28% of the U.S. customer base is made up of baby boomers. A boomer at present turns 62 years of age every seven seconds, and as this generation matures, the number of folks in the United States aged sixty five and over is supposed to approximately double by 2030. Snappy statistics show that this fifty plus age group of seniors are actually generating around 2 trillion bucks, in control of greater than 7 trillion dollars of wealth, and own 77% of the financial resources in our great nation. That’s not all—seniors additionally handle 50% of the discretionary powers in both government and private establishments.

Okay, so what’s the big deal, Alfie? Seniors undoubtedly are a whopping and influential population beginning today to exit the workforce. However, guess what many boomers mean to do during retirement? You guessed it—they plan to travel the world. In point of fact, they’ve now traveled beyond every other generation in U.S. history. And, in retirement, well over 1/2 of baby boomers intend to travel regularly, and a 4th of them have also resolved to go on at least one  once-in-a-lifetime holiday during the next ten years! 18,000,000 more affluent seniors will make travel their consistent pastime.  They will be abroad more than they’re at home. Believe it or not, this cluster places travel to be a higher goal than expending extra time with acquaintances (48%), getting in shape (37%), or looking for a healthier lifestyle (31%).

As experienced travelers, expect boomers to hunt out remote locations, significantly less structure, plus more ‘hands-on’ options for encountering the planet. They will not, as a rule, book herd-like coach tours, tedious sight-seeing excursions, or the most widespread and popular spots. Exceptional happenings turn them on. They want a stimulating, cultural/social encounter, lots of conversation, and ‘adventure travel’ experiences.

Adventure travel is defined as either physically demanding free-spirited activity or an off-the-beaten-path getaway or experience. Boomers would like to find the stuff of real life, the nitty gritty of precisely how individuals all over the world essentially think and live. Boomers would like to learn and better themselves—therefore, intellectually exhilarating travel also retains major charm for this set.

Whilst most seniors plan to travel with a partner or with good friends, over 11% indicate they would not mind traveling solo. Australia and New Zealand tend to test out as most preferred places at this time, but Europe is not far behind, then comes the far east, Russia, Africa, the Antarctic and, naturally, the good ole USA. What are some top activities boomers really are excited about? Adventure plans consist of off-roading, flying a helicopter, scuba diving, and going to an array of music fests.

Baby Boomers don’t mind letting someone else deal with booking details; however they wish to know that their local travel agent appreciates exactly the kind of travel experience they imagine. They desire agents that know the total panoply of travel fun and travel adventure available in the market and exactly how to help them gain access to these treks. Travel planners, you have now been given sensible forewarning. So here’s to seniors and the next three decades or so. May the path rise to meet you; may the breeze be always at your back, and may all your retirement adventure goals come true.

Don’t claim I didn’t warn you, folks! Baby boomers are going to explode the travel business as they start retiring. This growth isn’t going to go on a few years—it should last for many years. If perhaps you aspire to cash in on the bonanza, better hop on board right now.

Reasons Why Repitles Make Great Pets

In my opinion (and many other’s opinions) reptiles make great pets for people.

Here are some of my reasons why reptiles make great pets:

1) Reptiles do not have fur or hair so people can’t be allergic to them.

2) Reptiles come in many different sizes so you can get small ones if you don’t have much room for a huge pet or you can get a big reptile if you have the room for one.

3) Reptiles have many different personalities so if you get more than one you won’t get bored of them because they act the same.

4) You can hold a lot of reptiles (but not all) so you can have fun interacting with them.

5) Reptiles come in a LOT of different color patterns called morphs and a lot of new morphs come often so you can get a reptile that has the colors that you like

6) Reptiles have many different looks so if you want to have an awesome pet the people will want to see you can get a lizard with frills on it.

There are a LOT more reason why reptiles make great pets but I’m just going to post those for now (I’ll try and add some more reasons soon).

Things to do before buying a reptile:

1) Please do your research on the type of reptile that you are going to get. So many people buy reptiles but they don’t do research on the type of reptile that they get so the animal ends up getting the wrong care and it dies. All you have to do to find care sheets for the reptile that you want to do research on is type in “The reptile that you want to research (put what kind of animal you want to research where the bold words are) care sheets” in Google and websites that have care sheets for the reptile will show up.

2) Buy the supplies and set up the reptile’s tank before you get it because if you get the reptile and you don’t have everything for it set up and the reptile has to stay in the container it came in until you set everything up it will just make the reptile more stressed out.

Thinks that I’ve heard about reptiles that aren’t true:

1) I have heard people that reptiles are slimy and that is not true at all.

2) I have heard people say that reptiles are mean and that is not true. Reptiles just think of us as a predator that is going to eat them so if we try to pick them up they will sometimes try to bite or get away because they think they will be eaten but reptiles will usually get used to humans and human contact so they will stop trying to fight back or they will try and fight back a lot less often.

Keeping a pet in a group, such as a classroom, teaches the children to be responsible for another living thing, something outside of their usual norm.  Why is this important?  If children never learn the importance of some sort of service they will never be the volunteers, the social workers, the nurses, the firefighters, the police officers, or the school teachers that make our society function.  Caring for something in a physical way with no recompense but that small feeling of satisfaction that comes with responsibility is important.  It is especially important in our society that values such things less and less.

Keeping a pet in the classroom is also great fun, and gives opportunity for exploration of lifecycles and other aspects of biology, depending on what you choose.

Some pets, of course are more work than others, particularly if you have a young group (pre-school) and most of the work of keeping the pet will actually be up to the teachers.  Here is a short list of some pets that work well in a classroom situation.

Fish:  Okay, you might be thinking “yawn, boring”, but that is not the case.  A well kept fish tank can be a dynamic part of your classroom learning environment.  You can have an entire biosphere contained and self sustaining with the right fish, plants, snails and equipment.  Ask your local pet store about different environments like salt water vs. fresh water.  If you want something a little simpler, but just as interesting, set up your fish tank with a good filtration system and something to put some air into the water, and then scoop up a bucket of pond or lake water, complete with all the wonderful biodiversity that comes with it.  Dump that water right into the fish tank.  Don’t add tap water as the chlorine, fluoride and whatever else is in their will harm if not outright kill the tadpoles.  A good time to do this is in the spring when the tadpoles are just hatching out.  It’s brilliant to watch the little guys slowly change into frogs and toads right before your eyes.  Add some fresh water snails from the pond, a crayfish or fresh water clam if you can find them (all available in the mid-west where I am located) and some local minnows and you are set to watch the show.  Your tadpoles will be hungry, and water bugs and nymphs are a favorite food, so you might have to add some of those periodically, but I have had good luck with various kinds of fish food.  Keep a good supply of water and clean the tank occasionally (again, with the right fish and snails this will be kept to a minimum) and you will have a year long project to monitor and learn from.

Rodents:  Many teachers swear by the little critters from the family rodentia.  Rabbits, gerbils, rats, mice, guinea pigs all make lovely pets if properly cared for.  Again with any addition to your class room, it is important to get the info to keep the pets happy and healthy, so when purchasing or receiving the pet make sure you ask and record the best way to care for them.  Buy food that is specifically designed for the animal that you have and supplement with whatever vitamins that are recommended.  Don’t just feed your bunny lettuce and call it good.  They, like you, need a diverse diet to be healthy, and a gerbil eats differently than a guinea pig.   Make sure that they have enough room to move about (clear plastic gerbil balls are great fun in the classroom) and that you keep their food and water containers as well as their cage clean.  Some rodents will need to be cared for over the weekends and breaks, and I have found that involving the children is great fun and adds to their ownership of the pet.  Have the families of your class take turns taking the pet home (with an adequate supply of food and clear instructions of care and handling).  Make it something that the parents are completely on board with as some families will be unable to take that responsibility or even transport the animal.  Check out about.com at http://exoticpets.about.com/cs/resourcesgeneral/a/choosearodent.htm for a good comparison of different rodents as pets.

Reptiles and Amphibians:  Tree frogs, toads, snakes, lizards and turtles are great, but some health departments or accreditation boards may have a problem with them as they are often small and have been known to carry salmonella in the past.  Small children may be able to put the little critters in there mouths, or at least that is the argument.  Personally, I can not imagine the classroom that is so poorly monitored that a child is able to reach a tank, take off the top, catch the little guy and then pop it into their mouth.  But, there it is.  If you choose to have this option, which I love, be aware of that potential problem.  With that in mind, my favorite of these are tree frogs for ease of care and interest.  Most will change color with changes in their environment and will hide in the foliage provided making each day a new hunt.  You only have to clean the cage weekly, can leave them over the weekend, and feed them every one and a half to two weeks.  Most of these will require a heat lamp, and the tank set up is generally more expensive than the rodents or the fish, but worth it.

This is only a short list and if you are looking to add a pet to your room, I encourage you to contact your local pet store and discuss what you are and are not willing to deal with.  That being said-get a pet!  They are such a wonderful addition to any classroom it can only add to the learning day and the comfort and well-being of your class.
